IBM Cloud Private experiences | Released October 2018
challenge
How might we accelerate a developers interest in adopting a private cloud platform?
outcome
A guided experience, delivered in 3 months, that empowered developers to use data models to enrich their apps
role
Design Lead • Project scope, team process, design direction and delivery
challenge
Tailored journeys
The project presented a gnarly problem: how to show modern developers the value of our private cloud platform? Using data as the common language to bring data scientists and developers closer, we designed a guided experience with a core principle: help the user learn by doing.
[alignment] After agreeing we would focus on our developer persona, I led a team workshop to outline the user needs to address and focus management, engineering and design on the Aha moments that would make our experience memorable to users.

Harness your data
After multiple explorations and testing sessions we settled on letting users build their own journey, based on their expertise and goals. Providing different learning modules with clear expectations we empowered users to integrate data and enrich their apps, no install required.
[exploration] Using the user journey mapped during the workshop, we ideated on the different approaches for grouping and presenting the learning modules to developers, voted on which ideas to pursue, refined them, and ran them through usability tests.
[validation] Design research guided our iterations. We tested all aspects of the experience including: content, interactions and user flow. The research insights helped focus our direction as we moved into higher fidelity and implementation stages.
[prototypes] We used quick prototypes to test the user’s comprehension and build expectations with development to help them break down the required work. Below, some of the final design deliverables.
